Caritas Scholarships for 2024-2025 (Archdiocese of Chicago)
The Caritas Scholarship Program is offered to elementary students attending Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools. The scholarship is awarded to families in need of financial support to continue placing their child/ren in their Catholic school. Without this scholarship, thousands of students would not have the opportunity to receive quality education and grow in a faith-based environment. These students are also able to be part of a community at school and receive multiple avenues of support and encouragement from staff.
Since the program’s inception, over $22 million in scholarship money has been awarded to over 15,000 students across the archdiocese. Families must apply for Financial aid through FACTS in order to qualify.

Virginia and Philip Davidson Memorial Scholarship
The Davidson family has established the Virginia and Philip Davidson Memorial Scholarship to assist incoming families at Queen of Martyrs School to make Catholic education possible for their children.
Virginia and Phil Davidson were longtime Queen of Martyrs parishioners who sent six children through the halls of Queen of Martyrs (Rose ‘72, Laura ‘73, George ‘74, Lizzy ‘77, David ‘79 and Jimmy ‘81).
Virginia and Phil were fun, hardworking, loving parents who placed great importance on their Catholic faith, family, and the education of their children. They instilled in their children and twenty-two grandchildren these same priorities, strongly believing in the importance of a Catholic education. All twenty-two of their grandchildren attended or are currently attending Catholic grammar schools and high schools in the Chicagoland area.
In honor of Virginia and Philip Davidson, a $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to the family of an incoming Kindergarten - Grade 8 student(s) who will begin at Queen of Martyrs School in August of 2024-2025.

Tom and Kay Hanrahan Memorial Scholarship
Tom and Kay Hanrahan were active members of Queen of Martyrs Parish for over 50 years. Tom, a member of the Holy Name Society, was an usher at 4 PM Mass and volunteered at Bingo for decades. Kay, a member of the Altar & Rosary Society, was the parish secretary for many years, first for Monsignor Vitha and then for Fr. Bill Murphy. Many remember Kay from her acclaimed performances at the successful Q of M fundraiser, Café Royale, in the 1970s!
Tom emigrated from Ireland as a young man with the equivalent of an 8th grade education. He went on to become a proud union worker. Kay, the daughter of Irish immigrants, married young with a high school education. They both worked very hard for decades to provide a Catholic education for their large family. All eight of their children graduated from Queen of Martyrs (Peg ’68, Eileen ’69, Michael ’70, Maureen ’72, Patrick ’75, Tom ’76, Theresa (Terri) ’77, and Jack ’78) before going on to Catholic high schools and then earning degrees from Catholic universities. Tom worked two full-time jobs for 16 straight years and Kay, after raising eight children, went on to graduate nursing school and worked as an RN until age 86 in Catholic healthcare. Their commitment to Catholic education came at great personal sacrifice, a sacrifice that those paying for a Catholic education for their own children know all too well.
In honor of Tom and Kay, their children and grandchildren have established a scholarship to help families afford the quality education and faith foundation that Catholic schools provide. This scholarship is geared toward families with multiple children, children of hard-working parents who may struggle to afford tuition, and/or new families who are wondering how they will be able to afford Catholic grammar school education for their child/children.
For the 2024-2025 school year, four scholarships of $2,500 per family will be offered: Two for families with children who are currently enrolled and two for new families who will be enrolling their children at Queen of Martyrs.

Carla Kirkland Memorial Scholarship
Carla Kirkland was a long-time teacher at Queen of Martyrs School and a staunch believer in the value of Catholic education. A product of Catholic education herself, Carla graduated from Loyola University with the intention of becoming a grade school teacher in the Archdiocese of Chicago, which she did first at St. Richards and then for over 20 years at Queen of Martyrs.
As longtime residents of Evergreen Park, Carla and her husband, Kevin, sent their three children on to Catholic schools as well and dedicated time and talent at both St. Bernadette and Queen of Martyrs over the years.
In her honor, we are establishing the Carla Kirkland Memorial Scholarship to help make Catholic education more affordable with a $2,500 scholarship that will be awarded annually for families who reside in the former St. Bernadette parish and wish to send their children to Queen of Martyrs school.
